The Commonwealth Day theme for 2006 'Health and Vitality-The
Commonwealth Challenge" has been approved by Her Majesty the Queen.
The theme highlights the relevance of health, as illustrated in the
United Nations Millennium Development Goals (MDGs), adopted in 2000
and endorsed by 191 countries, which sets out the goals to be
achieved by 2015. Commonwealth Youth Programme Asia Center with a
vision of optimum participation of youth in the developmental
process and democratic functioning commemorates the Commonwealth Day
by organizing an essay competition. If you are 29 years of age or
younger, why not participate in the Commonwealth Youth Programme
Essay Competition and show your concern for making the world a
better place to live.
The goals of the essay Competition are:
· to provide a creative platform for the youth of the member
countries of Commonwealth Youth Programme Asia Center to show their
social consciousness by sharing their knowledge and concern with
others on a globally challenging issue.
· to sensitize about the
ethical and humanitarian values which lie at the heart of the
Commonwealth Youth Programme ethos
· to develop an attitude of
think globally act locally
· to inspire young people to aspire
to high standards of academic scholarship and creative writing
·
to empower young people to raise their voice in order to deal with
globally challenging issues.
Injury is the leading cause of
death and disability among youth. One out of two young people who
start and continue to smoke will be killed by tobacco-related
illness. Worldwide, 5% of all deaths of young people between the
ages of 15 and 29 are attributable to alcohol use. In some
countries, up to 60% of all new HIV infections occur among 15-24
year olds. All of the above health problems can be prevented or
significantly reduced through effective health programmes. It is
estimated that 50% of all new HIV infections are among young people
(about 7,000 young people become infected every day).
WHO define,
health is a state of complete physical, mental and social well-being
and not merely the absence of disease or infirmity. CYP Asia Center
while striving for the holistic development of youth cherishes and
practices the WHO definition of health. Considering the potentiality
and vulnerability of young people's health and fitness, CYP Asia
Center has decided the topic of the essay to be "Young People and
Health – Addressing Challenges" The winners of the competition shall
